Space has always been perceived as a fascinating environment, and many MMORPGs have tried to replicate this feeling. Alternating the good and the bad, some studios have managed to create some incredible MMORPGs in space.
The exploration of planets, the exploitation of resources, space battles and the customization of ships are all activities covered in the different universes that we are going to present to you.
However, this type of MMO is clearly not the most accessible. Indeed, you will probably have to go through a significant learning curve in order to take full advantage of these universes.
9/9 Star Wars : The Old Republic
The famous franchise of George Lucas has, for ten years, its own MMORPG offering many journeys through space.
Step into the shoes of a Jedi, a bounty hunter or even a Sith Lord, to take part in an immersive story. The latter takes place 3000 years before the movies, and will give you the opportunity to choose from 16 different fighting styles.
The game has classic content, such as PvP, quality PvE (quite complex) and evolution via daily quests. You can also take command of a ship and engage in space battles.
The game is available in Free to Play up to level 60, and the first 2 expansions are also free. With just under 60,000 “very positive” ratings on Steam, the game is definitely worth a look.
The game is mostly based on PvP, but raids and dungeons exist, and offer a quite different experience from what we know. The negative point of the game comes from its “Pay to Win” model, similar to a Black Desert Online.
8/9 Star Trek Online
Cryptic Studios’ space-based MMORPG has been around since 2010, and has been steadily delivering content over the past few years. Putting you in the shoes of a ship captain, the game will offer you no less than 125 narrative episodes.
During the story, you will have to choose between one of 3 factions: The Federation, the Romulan Republic or the Klingon Defense force. The goal is to advance your crew, participating in space battles, as well as explorations.
The game emphasizes storytelling and will appeal not only to fans of the license, but also to ordinary gamers. The real plus lies in its F2P model, making the game playable for free and without subscription.
Released in 2013 with a lot of expectations placed on it, Warframe is an MMORPG that lets you roam through space. You will be able to travel from planet to planet in order to eradicate critters of all kinds.
This “action rpg” is extremely dynamic and is based on a grinding system (a bit like Hack’n’Slash). If you like farming, you won’t have to pay a single euro.
Your progress will allow you to acquire new “Warframe”, an armor with 4 distinct skills. Theorycraft is therefore at the center of the game, and will allow you to test a large number of possible combinations.
Indeed, all items sold in the shop can be purchased using the currency collected in-game (except cosmetics). This F2P system therefore allows Warframe to offer a completely free experience to regular players.
A newcomer to the world of MMOs, Strarborne falls into the category of MMORTS. You start with a small space station, and your goal is to grow it to create a galactic empire.
To do so, you must build your space base, develop your fleet of ships, form political alliances, etc. Each of your stations, ships and outposts can be customized with a card system.
The latter allows you, for example, to add a damage bonus to a ship or a storage bonus to your station. There are currently more than 100 maps, allowing you great freedom in your strategy that will lead you to conquer space.
The negative point of the game lies in its P2W or rather “P2 Fast” model, which allows you to acquire bonuses such as improvement cards or platinum. The game is completely free to play according to our friends at Massivelyop.
5/9 Planetside 2
The Planetside franchise will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year, and, clearly, MMOFPS has never been in better shape than it is now. Offering you to embody one of the 6 classes, each of which has different characteristics.
Whether you are a fan of ranged combat, melee fights, or want to heal your allies, you are bound to find shoes that suit you.
The many maps will immerse you in fights that can accommodate up to 2000 players simultaneously. These fights can take place on a planet or in the middle of space!
Immersion is one of the strong points of the hit, since the explosions and other ship crashes are extremely well done. The movements are very convincing, and we really feel the power of the weapons that pass through our hands.
The icing on the cake, the game has one of the best F2P systems of its kind, and you won’t need to put your hand in your pocket.
4/9 Infinity: Battlescape
With this space MMORPG, we enter a completely different category than that of previous games: that of the combat simulator. At the controls of your ship, you will take part in massive battles, in a universe that is completely “open world”.
Mean by this that there are no loading screens in space, and that you can take part in several battles in a row without transitions. After joining a faction, you will need to help that faction develop and protect that faction’s infrastructure.
The battles are therefore intended to control resources, and to extend the influence of his faction. You can then use these resources to create ships, each with distinct characteristics.
Available in early access, the game offers a “Buy to play” system and you will have to spend 35€ to play it. A sum that the game is well worth, because of its gigantic potential.
3/9 Prosperous Universe
“In Prosperous Universe, you are the CEO of your own space company”. When I read this line, my first reaction was: What is the point of such a game? Today, I think Prosperous Universe is a masterclass!
You are therefore in control of your business and the goal is to develop it, in order to have an influence in space. To do this, you choose a solar system, a planet and a type of activity.
For example, you can choose to mine ore, sell fuel or develop a construction business. Like a real business, you will have to learn to manage costs, transport, taxes, in order to avoid bankruptcy.
For now, the only interactions between players are for trade and politics. The game is in early access and is free, but you can subscribe to a pro subscription in order to take advantage of advanced features.
2/9 Star Citizen
Released in Alpha for several years now, Star Citizen is undoubtedly one of the most ambitious games in history. It also has the potential to be one of the best MMORPGs . The story takes place in the 30th century, in a universe where humans have colonized several worlds, stars and solar systems.
There are 3 major game types, but the most played is Universe mode. The latter invites you to set off to conquer the universe, by offering you a large number of activities such as:
- Exploration of planets: Just exploration (some worlds are still empty)
- Mining: Harvesting ore
- Hunt Bounties: Hunt Criminals (You can put a bounty on a player’s head)
- Become a criminal: Destroy or steal other players’ ships, or even kill them.
- Miscellaneous missions: Delivering goods, for example
There are still a lot of bugs left in the game which makes it quite frustrating at times. In addition, you will have to pay the tidy sum of 65€ in order to take part in the early access! However, if you’re looking for an MMORPG set in space, Star Citizen is for you.
1/9 EVE Online
space. It must be said that the game is the den of fans of the genre, who manage one of the best economic systems of all MMOs.
Indeed, the latter is totally managed by players and corporations, and all the components that you will find on the market are created by players. To participate in this economy, you have the choice between a multitude of different methods:
- convoy attack
- War between corporations
The depth of the game is impressive and the handling of ship customization is endless. You can spend hundreds of hours trying to optimize them, using hundreds of different modules.
Your evolution, meanwhile, continues even when you are offline. With this feature, you can progress by logging in for 15 minutes a day. Mastering combat, economy, customization, meanwhile, will take you years!
